Today we will travel towards the Atlantic ocean for a full day excursion to Essaouira.
The name Essaouira comes from ‘’ AL SOUIRAH ‘’ meaning the little fortress surrounded by walls. The town is bathed by the Atlantic ocean. Because it lies right on the sea, Essaouira was obliged to defend itself from pirate assaults from all shores, and sheltered behind walls reputed impossible to storm.
A trading post bubbling with business of all kinds, Essaouira had always been greatly coveted, ever since the seventh century BC. The discovery of ceramic remains on the islands in Essaouira bay indeed confirm the presence of Phoenicians in the region at that time. But those who were to have the strongest influence on this town were without doubt the Portuguese.
Ancient Portuguese harbour ( known as Mogador ), a nice little town on the Atlantic Ocean, Essaouira is today a sea resort. But it has kept its famous and ancient hand craft in its Medina, where thuja and citrus mingle their scents as they are carved in multiple shapes.
